Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt was on the night shift as nurse so she could follow her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious from her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still at university. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of the home of a juror. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was given she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
